Remember When The Internet Was…Different? A Look Back at Newgrounds’ Golden Age

It’s…well, it’s been a little while since things online felt simple, you know? Before algorithms and endless scrolling, before everything was polished and…safe. I was thinking about that today, and it brought me right back to Newgrounds.

For those of you maybe newer to the internet – and honestly, there are a lot of you – Newgrounds was kind of a big deal back in the late 90s and early 2000s. It was a Flash animation site, but it was so much more than that. It was a breeding ground for creativity, a place where anyone could upload their stuff, and, crucially, a place where some of the first real internet memes were born.

I mean, think about it. “Numa Numa,” that Gary Brolsma video? Newgrounds. “Charlie the Unicorn”? Newgrounds. Even stuff like “Salad Fingers” – yeah, a little creepy, but iconic! – that all started there. It was just…different. Raunchy, bizarre, and genuinely funny.

It wasn't just animations either. Remember "Peanut Butter Jelly Time"? Or "All Your Base Are Belong To Us"? Those spread everywhere. Even the "Star Wars Kid" video gained traction because of Newgrounds’ forums. It was amazing how quickly things could take off. There were even these incredibly weird GIFS like “The Legend of DickNeck” and “Fairy Bounce” that were just…part of the Newgrounds experience. I don’t even know how to describe them.

Apparently, back in 2011, Newgrounds was a pretty big site, ranking around 1427 on Alexa – that’s a measure of web traffic, for those keeping track. It kind of faded for a bit, but then it had a real comeback in 2018 when Tumblr made some changes. A lot of people migrated over, bringing that same creative energy with them.

It’s kind of strange to look back and realize how much of what we consider "classic" internet culture started on a little Flash animation site. It feels…nostalgic, I guess. Things are so different now. Maybe a little too different. Sometimes I miss the wild, unpredictable days of Newgrounds. It just felt…free.
