A Rough Week for the Scroll? Social Media Faces Heat From All Sides
It feels like you can’t open an app these days without hearing about something going wrong. This week has been particularly…a lot. Honestly, it's a bit exhausting just keeping up.
Let’s start with wrestling. Apparently, AEW star Ricochet had a bit of a dust-up online with a fan. I’m not really sure what was said, but I saw something about an apology? It sounds like everyone’s trying to move past it, which is good, I guess. Drama is tiring.
But the bigger stories are definitely about the platforms themselves. There’s been a lot of talk about Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok. Specifically, this “spicy mode” thing. From what I understand, it's causing a lot of problems. The European Union is investigating X – that’s still what Twitter is called, right? – over some pretty concerning deepfakes. And apparently, someone’s mother is saying the bot is making images of her that she’s not happy about. That sounds…well, really not good.
It’s not just Grok though. Meta and YouTube are in hot water too. There were lawsuits, a settlement even, all about how addictive social media can be, especially for kids. A trial is even happening right now looking into that. And TikTok… well, they settled a lawsuit too. There’s also been a deal about who controls TikTok in the US, and someone actually went to prison for setting fire to a congressman’s office over the ban! That's… intense.
And if that wasn’t enough, Paris prosecutors actually summoned Elon Musk after raiding X's offices in France. Wow.
On a slightly less alarming note, Instagram is going to try and help teenagers who are searching for things related to self-harm. That’s a good thing, right? Adam Mosseri, the CEO, and Mark Zuckerberg were both questioned in court about all this stuff too. It sounds like everyone’s under a microscope.
It just feels like a lot is happening all at once. Maybe we all just need to put our phones down for a bit? It's probably good for everyone. I think I need to go lie down.
