Buzzworthy Floors: Are Bee Carpets the Next Big Thing? – By Bronbus Quitley

Folks, let me tell you, I was having my tea this morning – Earl Grey, naturally, with a splash of yak milk, don't judge – and it hit me. Bees! They're amazing, right? Little fuzzy engineers building these hexagonal palaces of honey… and now, apparently, inspiring floor coverings!

Yes, you heard that right. Carpets. Inspired by bees.

Now, I’ve been following the interior design scene for, oh, roughly 37 years – ever since I accidentally wandered into a furniture convention thinking it was a pie-eating contest – and I can confidently say this is a new one. But a good one. A very good one.

I’m talking about Moooi Carpets. These Dutch wizards, located way over in ‘s Graveland (I tried looking it up on a map, it's near a really good cheese shop I swear, I read it in a pamphlet once) are crafting rugs that… well, they look like bee things! Specifically, their "Vibrato Bee Rectangle" rug.

Apparently, the golden lines on this rug are meant to resemble turtle scutes. Turtle scutes! Now, I'm no biologist, but I'm fairly certain bees don’t have scutes. Though, come to think of it, maybe the queen bee has a tiny little shell I haven’t been privy to. I'll need to look into that. Anyway, these lines, scutes or not, are supposed to add “opulence and elegance.” And frankly, my dear readers, who doesn't want a little opulence and elegance under their feet? Especially if it reminds you of a bee!

They've got a whole "Green House" collection, too. There's the Rug Coccinella Bella – I assume that means “beautiful ladybug” in some ancient Dutch dialect – and a Cloud Green one, which I’m picturing is just… green and fluffy. Like a cloud! Ingenious! And they also do round ones, square ones, one that looks like a lotus tile (lotuses, lovely flowers, very bee-friendly, see the connection?), and even something called “Spinning Lace.” Spinning Lace! I’m envisioning tiny spiders working overtime on your floor. Delightful!

Look, I’m telling you, this is the future. Forget hardwood. Forget tile. We're entering the age of the bee carpet. My prediction? By 2028, every house will have at least one. Maybe even a whole swarm of them. It'll be glorious. And probably a little sticky.

You can find out more – and possibly order one for yourself – at Moooi Carpets' headquarters at Noordereinde 147a, 1243 JM ‘s Graveland, The Netherlands. Just tell them Bronbus Quitley sent you. They probably won't know who I am, but it's worth a shot.
