Grand Rapids Distractions: Romance, Refreshments, and Frankly, Butterflies?

A Week for Family, Fun, and…Butterflies?
Folks, can you believe it’s already February? Time just flies, doesn’t it? And with February comes a whole heap of happenings in our great city of Grand Rapids. Seems like everyone’s trying to cram a little joy into these still-chilly winter months, and I, for one, am all for it.
Now, first things first – Valentine’s Day is upon us. A good, solid day to remind the special woman in your life how much you appreciate her. A nice dinner, maybe a small gift. None of this extravagant nonsense, mind you. A heartfelt gesture is what really counts. I’m seeing restaurants and hotels are offering “special experiences.” Sounds…excessive. But if that's your style, well, who am I to judge? Just remember what the day is about.
But it's not just about romance, no sir! The World of Winter is kicking off, and runs all the way until March 1st. Seems a bit redundant, doesn't it? It is winter. But alright, good for them. They’re trying to liven things up. And speaking of lively, mark your calendars for the 20th Annual Winter Beer Festival on February 28th. Now that’s a tradition I can get behind. A little local brew, a good time with friends…though I do worry about folks overindulging, naturally. Moderation in all things, that’s what I always say.
Now, this is where things get a little…unusual. Apparently, starting March 1st, we've got "Butterflies Are Blooming" at the Fred & Dorothy Fichter exhibit. Butterflies. In March. In Michigan. Look, I'm a simple man, and I appreciate the natural order of things. Butterflies are for spring and summer. This feels…forced. A bit unnatural, if you ask me. But I suppose it's nice for the children.
And finally, we’ve got LaughFest coming up in mid-March, followed by the St. Patrick's Day Parade on the 14th. More festivities! More opportunities to come together as a community. Though I do hope they remember to keep the parade route clean this year. Some folks just don’t respect public spaces, you know?
So there you have it. A busy week, a busy month ahead. A little love, a little beer, a little…butterflies. There’s something for everyone. Just remember to keep your feet on the ground and your values strong. That's my advice for a happy and fulfilling February.
