A Welcome Thaw, But Don't Get Too Comfortable

Folks, it seems like Old Man Winter is finally loosening his grip. Here in Lansing, we’re enjoying a fair day, a solid 45 degrees as I write this. Feels like 39, admittedly, with a bit of a breeze coming in from the southwest at 12 mph – not enough to blow your hat off, but enough to remind you it's still March in Michigan.

Sunrise was a good one, came up right around 7:25 this morning. We’ve got a long daylight stretch today, sunset isn't 'til 8:01, which is a blessing after these short winter days.

Now, I checked the hourly, and it’s looking downright pleasant for a few hours. We’re supposed to hit 56 degrees this afternoon. Cloudy, yes, but 56 in late March? Seems almost…foreign. Don’t let it fool you though. These warm spells are nice, but they're also a reminder of the volatility of Mother Nature.

The experts—and I use that term loosely these days—are predicting this won't last. Seems rain and thunderstorms are headed our way. I wouldn’t be surprised, frankly. Can't trust a warm day in this state.

Down in Grand Rapids, they're seeing similar conditions, according to those folks over at weather.com. They’re bragging about being the “most accurate forecaster” for the last few years, though I take those awards with a grain of salt. Seems like they’re always predicting something drastic, just to get folks talking.

Still, enjoy the sunshine while it lasts. Get out there and breathe the fresh air. Just keep a jacket handy, and don’t be surprised if we’re back to scraping ice off the windshield next week. That's Michigan for ya.
