The Decline of Family Entertainment: A Look at ‘The Sheep Detectives’

Folks, I’ve just returned from a viewing of this
film called “The Sheep Detectives.” Now, don't get me wrong, the little ones seemed to enjoy it. My grandson, Timmy, gave it a solid thumbs up. But let’s be honest, a “delightful mystery” about sheep solving crimes? Is this where we’ve landed?

The New York Times, of course, gave it a “Critic’s Pick.” Predictable. They’re always eager to applaud anything that doesn’t involve traditional values or, frankly, effort. It's PG-rated, which used to mean something. A guarantee of wholesome content. Now? It just means it won’t offend the most sensitive among us.

This isn't about protecting children from seeing anything remotely challenging – it’s about fostering a generation with a sense of grit and morality. Where are the stories about bravery, sacrifice, and personal responsibility? Instead, we get sheep. Sheep, solving mysteries.

I understand things change. I really do. But when I was a boy, a good mystery meant a hard-boiled detective, a damsel in distress, and a clear-cut moral line. This
 this is fluff. Candy-coated nonsense.

It’s a shame. The artistry of filmmaking is being wasted on frivolous entertainment. We need stories that build character, not ones that encourage children to see sheep as
well, as detectives. What’s next? Squirrel lawyers? Badger accountants?

I'm not saying it's a bad movie, precisely. Timmy liked it, and a happy grandson is a good thing. But I fear “The Sheep Detectives” is a symptom of a larger problem. A cultural shift away from substance, towards
sheep. And that, my friends, is something to worry about.
