The Decline of Family Entertainment: A Look at âThe Sheep Detectivesâ
Folks, Iâve just returned from a viewing of this⊠film called âThe Sheep Detectives.â Now, don't get me wrong, the little ones seemed to enjoy it. My grandson, Timmy, gave it a solid thumbs up. But letâs be honest, a âdelightful mysteryâ about sheep solving crimes? Is this where weâve landed?
The New York Times, of course, gave it a âCriticâs Pick.â Predictable. Theyâre always eager to applaud anything that doesnât involve traditional values or, frankly, effort. It's PG-rated, which used to mean something. A guarantee of wholesome content. Now? It just means it wonât offend the most sensitive among us.
This isn't about protecting children from seeing anything remotely challenging â itâs about fostering a generation with a sense of grit and morality. Where are the stories about bravery, sacrifice, and personal responsibility? Instead, we get sheep. Sheep, solving mysteries.
I understand things change. I really do. But when I was a boy, a good mystery meant a hard-boiled detective, a damsel in distress, and a clear-cut moral line. This⊠this is fluff. Candy-coated nonsense.
Itâs a shame. The artistry of filmmaking is being wasted on frivolous entertainment. We need stories that build character, not ones that encourage children to see sheep as⊠well, as detectives. Whatâs next? Squirrel lawyers? Badger accountants?
I'm not saying it's a bad movie, precisely. Timmy liked it, and a happy grandson is a good thing. But I fear âThe Sheep Detectivesâ is a symptom of a larger problem. A cultural shift away from substance, towards⊠sheep. And that, my friends, is something to worry about.
