Squirrel Activists Employ Holocaust Rhetoric—Are They Nuts?

Are “Save the Squirrels” Saving… or Silently Suffering?

Now, I like a squirrel as much as the next fella. They’re industrious little critters, burying nuts, livin’ off the land. A symbol of American self-reliance, if you ask me. But this “Save the Squirrels Initiative” has got me concerned, and frankly, a little disturbed.

I stumbled onto their operation while doing some research – good, honest research, mind you – and what I found was… unsettling. They claim to be a non-profit, dedicated to rehabilitating squirrels, chipmunks, and other woodland creatures. Fine, admirable. But dig a little deeper, and you find a YouTube playlist racking up millions of views, detailing their methods. Now, I’m no expert on animal husbandry, but some of the things I saw… trapping, relocating… it felt heavy-handed.

And then I saw the video. “The Final Solution.” Now, I understand young folks sometimes choose poor wording, but that phrase? Applying that kind of language to a wildlife program? It’s frankly appalling. The video accuses the initiative of, and I quote, a “squirrel Holocaust.” A Holocaust! That’s a sacred term, reserved for a tragedy of unimaginable scale. To casually toss it around because you disagree with how someone’s handling rodents? It’s disrespectful, plain and simple.

Their Facebook page boasts over 3,000 likes, and over a hundred people actively discussing them. Are these folks aware of the rhetoric being employed? Are they seeing the same disturbing implications I am?

Look, I appreciate the intent, I really do. But good intentions don't excuse questionable practices, or even worse, inflammatory language. We need to ask ourselves: is “Save the Squirrels” actually saving squirrels, or are they creating a different kind of problem, masked by a fuzzy tail and a cute little face? Something smells… nutty about this whole operation, and it’s not just acorns.
