Tradition Under Siege: A Week of Modern Distractions

A Week of…Observations
Well, folks, another week is upon us, and it seems the calendar is busier than ever. Seems like every day has something attached to it these days. I always say, a little common sense and a focus on tradition would do us all good, but who am I to judge what people choose to celebrate? Still, a fella ought to be aware of what’s going on around him, so let’s have a look at what this week holds.
We kick things off Wednesday with April Fool’s Day. Now, I’ve never been one for practical jokes. Always struck me as childish, frankly. Though, I’ll admit, a good, clean ribbing now and then doesn’t hurt. Alongside the…silliness, there’s also something called “Take Down Tobacco National Day of Action.” Honestly, folks, if you choose to enjoy a smoke, enjoy a smoke. Government overreach is a real problem in this country, always poking and prodding at personal freedoms. And then, there’s something called “Transgender Day of Visibility.” Well, everyone's visible these days, aren't they?
Thursday looks to be a culinary delight, if you’re into that sort of thing. National Burrito Day and National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day? Seems like a lot of…carbohydrates. Goodness knows we need to be watching what we eat. They’ve also got “World Autism Awareness Day,” and that's certainly a worthy cause – always good to remember those who need a little extra understanding. Down in Florida, they’re observing “Pascua Florida Day,” which sounds…foreign, if you ask me.
Friday is Good Friday for a good chunk of the country – Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, North Carolina, North Dakota, New Jersey, Tennessee, and Texas, and all of Georgia gets the day off. A good reminder to take stock and reflect on the values that built this nation. Seems like folks are forgetting those these days.
And finally, Sunday brings Easter! A truly meaningful holiday, celebrating faith, family, and renewal. Though I do wish folks would remember the religious significance and not just focus on the eggs and candy. There’s also a “National Deep Dish Pizza Day” and a “National Recommit to Your Fitness Day.” Well, maybe after the pizza.
Plus something called "International Day of Conscience". Now, isn't every day a day for conscience?
So there you have it. A week of celebrations, observances, and…well, a whole lot of everything. Just remember to keep your feet on the ground and your head out of the clouds.
