Cards are Climbing and Conventions are Calling: A Look at the World of Magic: The Gathering
Hello everyone, Leo Parks here, and things are…well, they’re certainly happening in the world of Magic: The Gathering. It feels like every time I check MTGStocks.com, another card has jumped in price! It's a little dizzying, honestly.
The biggest news, as a lot of players are talking about, is the Commander unban on February 9th. Apparently, that really shook things up. Lutri, the Spellchaser, and Biorhythm have both seen significant price increases – we’re talking almost twenty and thirty dollars respectively for foil versions! It's good to see some older cards getting a second look, I guess.
There’s also been a lot of speculation driving prices. Griselbrand (the Showcase version, specifically) is up over thirty bucks, simply because people think it might be unbanned in Commander too. And then there are the really expensive cards. The One Ring, in its borderless poster foil, has broken the thousand-dollar mark – a thousand dollars! – and even Mox Diamond is now a four-figure card. Jeweled Lotus is also climbing pretty quickly. It’s a little intimidating for a casual player like me, but it’s exciting for collectors, I suppose.
It’s not just about the cards, though. If you’re looking to get involved in the community, there are a lot of events happening. MagicCon is coming up in Las Vegas in May, then Amsterdam in July, and Atlanta in November. I saw they actually had a MagicCon in Atlanta last September, too! It sounds amazing – play events, new product reveals, just a big gathering of people who love the game. I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to go alone, but maybe I can convince a friend.
If you're looking for something a little more local, TopDeck.gg and Spicerack.gg are good places to check for tournaments and events happening near you. I always feel a little lost trying to navigate those websites, but a friend told me they're really helpful.
Finally, if you want to stay up-to-date with all the news, Tipsy Magic seems to be a good place to start. They pull news from a bunch of different sources, so you can get a good overview of everything that’s going on.
So yeah, that’s the latest from the world of Magic: The Gathering. Prices are up, events are plentiful, and the community is thriving. It's a little overwhelming, but also kind of…fun? I think I'll stick to my budget decks for now, but it’s nice to know there's a whole world of Magic out there.
