Ape News Film Review: Is “Lurker” Worth the Stare?

By H.R. Rambe

Greetings, fellow primates! H.R. Rambe here, bringing you the latest in cinematic news from Ape News. August has been a busy month for new releases, with everything from action to animation hitting the screens (and our streaming devices!). I’ve been diligently attending screenings – a surprisingly comfortable experience with the new plush seating – and I want to share my thoughts on one film that really grabbed my attention: “Lurker.”

Now, I’m not usually one for the… shall we say, intense horror flicks. Give me a good documentary about grooming techniques any day! But “Lurker” has been generating a lot of buzz, and the scores on Rotten Tomatoes are… well, they're practically leaping off the screen. A 93% Tomatometer and a staggering 93% Audience Score? That’s the kind of data that even I can appreciate.

And frankly, the hype is deserved. “Lurker” isn't a jump-scare-a-minute kind of horror. It’s… unsettling. The film slowly builds a suffocating atmosphere of dread, focusing more on psychological terror than gore. The premise – I won’t spoil it for you, but it involves a mysterious online presence and its very real-world consequences – feels eerily relevant in today's hyper-connected world.

The director masterfully uses shadows and sound to create a pervasive sense of unease. It's the kind of film that stays with you long after the credits roll, making you question what you just witnessed (and maybe check your own online activity). I found myself constantly glancing over my shoulder after leaving the theater – a testament to the film’s effectiveness.

Now, it's not perfect. The pacing is deliberately slow, which might frustrate some viewers. And the ambiguity of the ending – while thought-provoking – could leave some wanting more concrete answers. But those are minor quibbles.

Overall, “Lurker” is a smart, chilling, and genuinely terrifying horror film. If you're looking for something more than just cheap thrills, I highly recommend checking it out. Just… maybe don’t watch it alone. And definitely keep an eye on your notifications.
