Beyond the Oom-Pah: Surprisingly Fun Things You Can Do With a Tuba

By Leo Parks, Jape News Staff

Okay, so, tubas. Big, shiny, impressive…and maybe you think they’re just for, you know, oom-pah. And they are great for that, honestly. But I’ve been doing a little digging, and it turns out there’s a surprisingly wide range of fun things you can do with these incredible instruments!

I was chatting with some musicians – and also browsing online, a Reddit user mentioned something really cool. Apparently, you can actually imitate a didgeridoo with a tuba! I haven’t tried it myself, I’m not exactly known for my musical prowess, but the idea of fooling people with a tuba-didgeridoo combo during rehearsals sounds… fun! And harmless, which is good.

But it’s not just about novelty sounds. Tubas are actually really versatile. They aren’t just limited to traditional orchestral settings, or even just marching bands. You’ll find them in jazz groups too! Apparently, they really add a unique depth to the sound. It's nice to see an instrument so widely used.

And speaking of marching bands, did you know tubas can be converted into marching tubas? That’s amazing! They can actually be played while you’re, you know, marching! That seems...difficult. But cool.

The most heartwarming thing I learned? Apparently, over 500 tubas once gathered together to play Christmas songs. “Silent Night,” specifically. Can you imagine? A whole chorus of tubas? That sounds...lovely. Really lovely, actually. It’s good to know these big instruments can also make beautiful, peaceful music.

So, if you're looking for an instrument that’s both powerful and surprisingly adaptable, the tuba might just be for you. Or, even if you don’t play, it’s cool to know all the unexpected things you can do with one!
