Why Is There Always New Stuff?!

Hi! I'm Jerome Skinly and I write for Jape News. Today I’m gonna tell you about my Uncle Leo. He gets REALLY confused.

Yesterday, Uncle Leo was SUPER mad. He said, “First, they said the giant pumpkins were winning the contest! Then, TODAY, they said a little pumpkin named Pip won! WHAT IS HAPPENING?!?”

He was yelling at the TV. My mom said he needs to calm down and eat his toast. But he kept saying the news was lying.

I tried to explain it to him. I learned about it! It's like... imagine you're building with LEGOs. You build a cool castle, right? But then you take it apart to build a spaceship! The pumpkin story was like the castle, and the Pip story was like the spaceship. The news just… builds new things!

He still didn't get it. He said, "But yesterday was TRUE! Pip didn't win yesterday!"

I told him it's because NEW stuff happened. Maybe Pip got a special boost of pumpkin food or something. And the news people think we want to hear about the NEW winner! They have to tell us what’s happening now.

My mom said it's like when you're playing. You're really into drawing a dinosaur, but then you see a shiny rock and you HAVE to play with the rock. The news is like that, always finding something new and shiny.

Uncle Leo still looked confused. He said, "So it's not about what's real, it's about… what's NEW?"

I think that’s kinda right! It's not that the first pumpkin story wasn’t real then, it's just… the news wants to tell you what’s happening right now. It keeps going and going and going, like a race car!

He sighed and went to find more toast. I think he still doesn’t understand. But I do! And now you do too! The news is just always changing, and that’s okay. Now if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go build a LEGO robot! Maybe that'll be on the news tomorrow!
