Bananas and Battle Lines: Climate Change Tears America Apart

By H.R. Rambe, Ape News Staff Writer

The air feels thick with more than just humidity these days. Here at Ape News, we’ve been crunching the numbers from a recent national survey, and the results are… unsettling, even for a seasoned observer of human behavior like myself. It's clear: climate change is currently the most divisive issue gripping America.

We apes understand division. A perfectly ripe banana can cause quite a squabble in the troop. But the level of polarization surrounding this issue is something else entirely. There’s been no other year in which the two parties have been more divided on climate change, and it was the most divisive issue among the issues covered in the recent survey.

Let’s look at the figures. A staggering 78% of Democrats now see addressing climate change as a top policy priority. A large number, yes, but compare that to the 21% of Republicans who feel the same way. That’s a gulf wider than the Amazon River.

It’s not that other issues aren’t causing friction. Gun control, immigration, and even healthcare are all points of contention, naturally. But the partisan split on those issues, while significant, isn’t as dramatic as what we’re seeing with the changing climate.

What does this mean for the future? It means gridlock, undoubtedly. It means important conversations are being stifled by entrenched positions. And frankly, it means a potentially disastrous lack of action on a problem that affects everyone, regardless of political affiliation.

Here at Ape News, we don’t pretend to have all the answers. We simply present the facts. And the fact is, America is deeply divided on climate change. And until we find a way to bridge that gap, we’re all going to be feeling the heat.
