Things Are… Happening, I Guess.

A Little Bit of Everything, Really

It feels like… a lot is happening. That’s the impression I get, anyway, looking at the business news today. It's kind of all over the place, honestly.

The big thing everyone seems to be talking about is this ruling against Meta and YouTube. Apparently, they were found responsible for a young person becoming addicted to their platforms. That seems… serious. I guess it was about how the apps are designed to keep you scrolling, and the jury felt that caused harm. It's tough, because those apps are fun, but I can see how it could become a problem.

Speaking of Meta, they’re also laying off 700 people. That’s never good. But, and this is a but, they’re also giving a bunch of stock to their top executives. It just feels a little… weird timing, you know? Layoffs and bonuses at the same time. I'm sure there’s a good explanation, but it doesn’t look great.

And then there’s the oil situation. Things are happening in Iran, and that's affecting prices. Apparently, something happened way back in 1988 with a U.S. warship and an Iranian mine, and that’s still being talked about. Plus, Asia is getting hit pretty hard by the rising oil costs and a weaker dollar. That's not good for anyone.

Here in California, we’re already feeling it at the pump. Gas is getting so expensive—almost six dollars a gallon! That’s like, two dollars more than the national average. Ouch. I’m starting to think I should probably just… bike more.

It's not just gas prices, either. Apparently, even Italian ice could get more expensive if oil prices keep going up. Who knew?

On top of everything, it’s tough out there for new grads. A lot of people are worried that AI might be taking some of the jobs they were hoping for. And even the cool new AI video generator, Sora, is being shut down after only a few months. It just feels like things are changing so fast.

There was some news about housing too – a bill in the Senate about who should be able to buy single-family homes. And the Supreme Court ruled in favor of an internet provider in a copyright case. Honestly, I got a little lost in the details there.

It just feels like… a lot. A little bit of good, a little bit of bad, and a whole lot of uncertainty. I think I’ll just stick to my coffee and try not to think about it too much.
