LUNAR CRUMPETS AND THE MISSING MECHS—ARE PINEAPPLES INVOLVED?

Where’s My Mech, Honestly? - By Bronbus Quitley
Right, so I was having a crumpet this morning – a very good crumpet, sourced directly from the lunar crumpet farms, you know – and I got to thinking. Where are the giant robots? Seriously! We were promised them! Back in the 90s, everyone thought by now we’d all be piloting skyscraper-sized metal behemoths, right? I mean, I distinctly remember a magazine predicting personalized mechs by 2010. It had a picture of a lady in a pink one, doing her grocery shopping. A pink mech!
Anyway, I’ve been doing some digging – which mainly involved scrolling through Reddit, let’s be honest, that's where all the real news is – and apparently, it’s… complicated. Turns out building something the size of a small apartment building and making it walk isn’t exactly a walk in the park. Who knew?
I spoke to a chap online – probably a very clever chap, he had a lot of numbers after his name – and he explained that these things would be terribly unbalanced. Terribly! Like trying to balance a pineapple on a unicycle during an earthquake. Apparently, the weight and the sheer length of the things make them prone to, and I quote, “going down like a sack of spanners.” Not very dignified for a multi-million dollar fighting machine, is it?
And apparently, tanks are already pretty good at, well, tank things. Which, you know, fair enough. But giant robots could be useful. Imagine just… walking up to a building and, instead of blowing it up with expensive missiles, you just step on it. Saves a fortune in ammunition! I read that the military is actually considering this. Though, my cousin Mildred says the logistical nightmares of getting parts for something that big would be even worse. Mildred's a logistics expert, she once organized a pigeon race across three counties. A very successful race.
But it’s not just the size and balance, see. It’s the fiddly bits. This Ken Goldberg, a robot scientist – apparently, they’re a thing! – gave a talk on this very subject. He says we're still struggling to make robots do simple things, like pick up a box without crushing it. Can you believe it? We sent robots to Mars, but we can't get one to put the washing out!
He says it's all about dexterity. Tiny, intricate movements. Turns out building a robot that can delicately pluck a grape is harder than building one that can stomp on a city. Go figure!
I did see on Reddit – and it was a very popular post, apparently from January of last year and again on the 31st – that people are still talking about it. They’re still hoping. And honestly? So am I.
I mean, imagine the traffic jams! You'd need a special lane for mechs. And the parking! It’d be a nightmare. But a fun nightmare.
So, when are we getting our giant robots? I haven’t the foggiest. But I'm holding out hope. And maybe investing in some reinforced paving stones. Just in case.
