Gaming Industry Troubles Signal Decay of American Values

The Game is Changing, Folks – And Not Always For The Better

Now, I’ve always been a proponent of good, wholesome fun. A bit of a Mario Kart session with the grandkids, maybe a strategic turn in Civilization. But let me tell you, the gaming world these days… it’s a far cry from the simple pleasures of my youth. And frankly, a lot of what I’m seeing is downright concerning.

First off, we're hearing about layoffs at Epic Games, the folks behind that Fortnite craze. A thousand jobs gone, they say because people are losing interest. Losing interest! After all the screen time these kids get, you’d think they’d be glued to it forever. Shows you what happens when you rely on fleeting fads instead of solid, American-made entertainment.

And speaking of things crumbling, the Rec Room is shutting down. Apparently, even a platform once valued at $3.5 billion can’t survive. It's another example of these tech companies building castles in the air. No foundation, no real substance. Just… gone.

Now, on the tech front, Nvidia is pushing this “DLSS 5” which uses, get this, artificial intelligence to make games look better. AI! Don't get me wrong, progress is good, but this feels like another step towards letting machines do everything for us. Soon they’ll be playing the games for us, and what kind of country will we be then? They even pulled the trailer, which tells you something isn’t right.

But it’s not just the big companies. There’s trouble brewing everywhere. The FBI is investigating malware on Steam – malware! – and Italy is looking at Activision Blizzard for, essentially, pushing kids to spend more money in their games. Seems like everyone's trying to nickel and dime you these days.

Even Nintendo, a company I respect, is fighting with the government over tariffs. A good, strong business shouldn't have to beg for refunds!

There are a few bright spots. New Pokémon games coming to the Switch 2 in 2027. Can't argue with that, good clean family fun. And a free, 10/10 rated game on Steam on the 15th? That’s something everyone can enjoy.

But the overall picture is… unsettling. We've got rising CPU prices, foreign investment in Capcom, and even safety concerns at the Game Developers Conference, with some folks avoiding it due to increased ICE presence. It's a changing landscape, and I’m not sure it’s changing for the better.

And now they're even making kids prove their age on Roblox! Honestly, what's next? Fingerprints required to play Solitaire?

I tell you what, folks. Maybe it's time we all turned off the consoles and went outside. A good game of baseball, a picnic in the park… those are the things that build character. Not these digital distractions. Just my two cents.
