MY ROCK IS STILL COOL!

Why Did the News Stop Talking About My Rock?

Hi! I’m Jerome Skinly and I’m seven. I have a really cool rock. It’s gray and kinda sparkly. Last week, everyone was talking about my rock!

I showed it to Mrs. Gable at school and she said it was a “newsworthy event.” I didn’t know rocks could be news, but she said it was because it looked like a dinosaur egg! She took a picture and sent it to the news.

Then, on the TV, a lady said, “Local boy discovers possible dinosaur egg!” It was SO COOL! My mom made cookies. My dad high-fived me. Even Old Man Fitzwilliam next door said it was interesting!

Lots of people came to look at my rock. They asked me questions. Like, “Is it heavy?” (Yes!) And “Where did you find it?” (In my backyard, by the rose bushes!) The news people were here too, with big cameras. They reported it, which means they told everyone.

But then… the news stopped talking about my rock.

I asked my mom why. She said something about a “news cycle.” It sounded like a bicycle, but for news. She said the news people have to find new things to talk about, and my rock wasn’t new anymore.

I don't get it. My rock is still here. It still looks like a dinosaur egg! Just because they stopped talking about it doesn’t mean it’s not a cool rock anymore!

My mom said lots of things happen, and the news only talks about them for a little bit. She said it's like when you build a tower with blocks. It’s super fun when you’re building it, but then you build something else.

But my rock is special! I wish the news would remember how special it is. Maybe if I found another sparkly rock, they'd talk about both of them? I'm gonna go look now. Maybe I'll be a newsworthy event again!
