Babies and Shiny Phones? By Jerome Skinly

Hi! I’m Jerome and I’m seven. My teacher, Miss Lily, said I could write for the news! Today I wanna talk about babies and… iPhones. My cousin Leo just had a baby sister, Luna. And my mom was talking about how some babies have iPads and stuff.

I asked my mom if Luna should get an iPhone. She said NO WAY! And then she told me why.

She said babies are still learning how to do stuff. Like, learn to grab toys, and crawl, and talk! If a baby is looking at a shiny phone all the time, they might not learn those things good. It’s like, if you’re always watching TV, you don’t build with LEGOs, right?

My mom said the people at the World Health Organization – that’s a REALLY important group, she said – they think babies shouldn’t even look at screens until they’re bigger. Like, when you start kindergarten! That’s a long time!

She said phones are made for grown-ups. Grown-ups need them to call people and look at maps. But babies need to look at faces and play with blocks and learn about squishy things!

I think that makes sense. Luna likes to grab my hair and drool on my cars. That’s way more fun than a phone. Plus, my mom says if she’s always on her phone, then I might want one all the time too! And that would be too much screen time for everyone.

So, no. I don’t think babies should have iPhones. They should have rattles and blankies and people to cuddle them. That’s way better.
