STAY STRONG AMERICA: Don't Let the Media Manufacture Your Worry!

Keeping a Stiff Upper Lip in Troubled Times

Folks, let’s be honest. It feels like every time you turn on the television, or – heaven forbid – scroll through one of those social media contraptions, there's another catastrophe brewing. War, economic woes, political squabbling… it’s enough to give a sensible person indigestion. I've been getting letters, quite a few actually, asking what a patriotic American can do about all this anxiety the news is causing. And I’m here to tell you, we’re not helpless!

Now, I’m not saying you need to ignore what’s happening in the world. A responsible citizen stays informed. But there’s a difference between being informed and being consumed by it all. Frankly, some of this modern “news” feels designed to simply upset people.

First things first: control what you can control. You can’t single-handedly fix the situation in Ukraine, or magically make inflation disappear. But you can control how much of this negativity you allow into your home. I suggest limiting your intake. Maybe just check the headlines once a day – that's all a person truly needs. Mute those infernal notifications on your phone! Constant buzzing and flashing isn’t informing you, it’s agitating you.

And instead of dwelling on things you can't change, focus on what you can. Volunteer at a local charity. Donate to a cause you believe in. Write a letter to your congressman – a well-reasoned letter, mind you, not one full of angry ranting. These are tangible actions, and they’ll make you feel like you’re actually contributing, rather than just passively panicking.

Don't isolate yourself either. Talk to your neighbors, your family, your friends. A good, honest conversation over a cup of coffee can do wonders for the soul. Misery loves company, they say, but shared strength is even better.

Now, some folks might suggest “challenging your thoughts” or “practicing self-care.” Sounds a bit…new age to me, but I suppose there’s something to be said for keeping a clear head. Maybe listen to some good, old-fashioned patriotic music. A bit of Sousa can lift anyone’s spirits. Or get outdoors and do some yard work – physical activity is always a good way to blow off steam.

And finally, if you’re really struggling, talk to someone. A friend, a family member, your doctor. There’s no shame in admitting you need a little help.

Look, times are tough. But America has always overcome challenges. We’re a resilient nation. So keep a stiff upper lip, focus on what you can do, and remember: a little bit of common sense and good old-fashioned American spirit can go a long way.
