My Mom Says NO to the Fridge!

Hi! I'm Jerome Skinly and I'm seven! My mom is REALLY good at keeping food safe. But she told me something kinda weird today. Some foods…are NOT allowed in the fridge! I thought the fridge was for all the food!

She said olive oil gets sleepy and hard if it’s too cold. Like when I get too cold and my fingers get all stiff! But that's bad for the oil, she said. And butter? She says it likes being just…out. Not too hot, not too cold. Just right! Like Goldilocks.

Cereal is a BIG no-no. She said it gets soggy and smells like…old fridge! Yuck! I like my cereal crunchy. And chocolate! My FAVORITE! She said the fridge makes it look funny and it doesn't taste as good. It gets…bloomy? Like flowers, but not good bloomy.

Honey too! It gets all grainy in the fridge. Like sand! Nobody wants sandy honey. And jam and jelly can just stay in the cupboard for a little while, she said. That's good because I like jam on my toast!

Basil! That's the green leafy stuff. She said it gets yucky and rotten if you put it in the fridge. So it stays in a cup of water on the counter.

Cake! This is the hardest rule. Cake is SO good, but she says it gets hard in the fridge. So you have to eat it fast! Which I am good at.

Pears are tricky. They like being out at first, but then you can put them in the fridge if you need to. And lemons and limes are okay on the counter for a bit!

She even said dry beans don’t like the fridge! They’ll get…sad? And lard and shortening? Those stay out too! That sounds weird, but my mom knows best.

And eggs! Sometimes you don't even need to put them in! It depends where they come from, she said. That’s kinda confusing.

So, yeah. Lots of stuff can't go in the fridge. It's a lot to remember, but my mom says it keeps everything yummy! And I like yummy food!
