Lights, Remembrance, and…Everything Else, I Guess?

A Week of Remembrance and… Lights?
Hi everyone, Leo Parks here! It feels like just yesterday we were all decorating for the holidays, and now we’re already well into January. It’s a little dizzying, honestly. But that’s Grand Rapids for you – there's always something going on!
This week, things are a little… layered. We’re still enjoying the tail end of the beautiful holiday displays around town. If you haven't already, it’s still a good time to check out the Christmas & Holiday Traditions exhibit and the ENLIGHTEN Holiday Light Show at Frederik Meijer Gardens. They’re running for just a little while longer, and honestly, who doesn’t love a good light display when it's cold outside? It’s just… nice.
But it’s also a week for remembering important things. This Monday, January 18th, is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. It’s a really important day to pause and think about Dr. King’s legacy and everything he fought for. It’s good to remember, you know? Really good.
And around the 20th, some folks are talking about the possibility of inauguration events. I’m not super plugged into politics, but I heard it's around that time, so keep an eye out if that’s something you’re interested in.
It’s funny, looking ahead, thinking about all the other things coming up this year. Valentine’s Day, Black History Month, St. Patrick’s Day… they seem so far away now, but they’ll be here before we know it! And then Women’s History Month, Mother’s Day, Juneteenth, Pride, the Fourth of July… all the way through Halloween and New Year’s again! Grand Rapids really does have something for everyone, all year round.
Honestly, it's a little overwhelming to think about all of it, but in a good way, I think. Just remember to take things one day at a time. And maybe bundle up if you’re going to look at lights! Stay warm, everyone.
