Giant Robots Are Hard, Apparently?

So, Uh, Where Are All the Giant Robots?
Hey everyone, Leo Parks here. Been thinking, you know, like a lot of us probably have – where are the giant robots? I mean, we’ve been promised them for, well, decades now. It feels like we should have one by now, right?
It's easy to get caught up in the cool factor. Imagine a huge robot just… walking around. It’d be amazing! And honestly, the idea of something that big just smashing through obstacles without needing a ton of bombs or bullets? That’d be really helpful, I guess. Plus, some experts say they could even be useful in factories, switching between jobs easier than the robots we have now.
But apparently, building one is… tricky. Really tricky.
I was reading up on it, and it turns out there are a lot of problems. For starters, it’s not like they’re more efficient than what we already have. Lots of jobs a giant robot could do are already being done by smaller, specialized robots, or even just, like, tanks. And a giant robot? Well, it would need to find somewhere to hide, which seems… difficult.
The biggest hurdle seems to be getting the tech right. It’s not just about building something big, it’s about making it smart. One scientist I read about said robots haven't really lived up to expectations because they don’t have enough real-world experience to learn from. Apparently, even a robotic hand can cost over 110,000 euros! That’s a lot of euros.
And it's not just about the hardware, either. They need to be able to think - predict what's going to happen around them and keep track of themselves. Apparently that’s not really where AI research is focused right now.
Plus, and this is kind of obvious when you think about it, keeping something that huge standing up is a huge challenge. Big movements mean it's hard to balance!
So, yeah. It's complicated. It’s not that we can’t build a giant robot, it’s that it’s incredibly expensive, technically difficult, and, honestly, maybe not even all that practical.
Still… a part of me really wants to see one. Maybe someday.
