Hot Dogs: They're… Whatever You Think, Really.

Is a Hot Dog a Sandwich? Or… a Salad?!

It’s a question that’s plagued philosophers, sparked heated debates at backyard barbecues, and even… affected tax law? We’re talking, of course, about the age-old query: is a hot dog a sandwich?

Honestly, it’s a tough one. I mean, you could argue it is. A hot dog generally involves a filling—the dog itself—between two pieces of bread. That seems to fit the basic definition, right? And apparently, the state of New York agrees! Their tax guidelines define sandwiches pretty broadly, saying it includes “cold and hot sandwiches of every kind…regardless of the filling.” California seems to feel the same way. So, legally speaking, in those states, a hot dog is a sandwich. Who am I to argue with the law?

But then you have folks like the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council – and, well, they’re pretty passionate about this. They say a hot dog is its own thing, a unique culinary creation that shouldn’t be lumped in with sandwiches. And you know, I kind of see their point. A hot dog just feels different.

I was chatting with Brenda at the office about it yesterday, and she threw a real curveball at me. “What if,” she said, with a mischievous grin, “a hot dog is actually a salad?”

Now, I hadn't even considered that. But when you think about it… lots of people put toppings on their hot dogs! Ketchup, mustard, relish, onions, chili… even coleslaw! Those are all pretty standard salad ingredients. So, is the hot dog the “protein” of the salad? It's… a thought.

Merriam-Webster defines a sandwich as “two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between,” which, okay, technically a hot dog could fit that. But a salad? That's a bit of a stretch, I admit.

Honestly, after all this thinking, I’m more confused than ever. Maybe it’s best if we just enjoy hot dogs for what they are: delicious, convenient, and the subject of surprisingly intense debate. I'm just glad I didn't have to pick a side. It’s probably best to just go with whatever everyone else is saying, you know?
